Can I Swaddle a Rolling Baby?

Unfortunately, there comes a time in every parent’s life when your baby is suddenly on the move and you realise you can no longer use your favourite sleeping aid, the swaddle. Most babies sleep so well when swaddled that many parents dread the thought of having to transition to something different. But fear not, Love To Dream™ and Katie Hilton, our Expert Midwife and Health Visitor have the answers…

Although the exact time will vary for each baby, most babies start rolling somewhere between 4 to 6 months of age.  Once your baby starts to roll, it’s important that they are able to roll back over onto their stomach should they roll over in their sleep. Having their arms free from the swaddle helps them to achieve this.

Transitioning from swaddling with Love to Dream Transitions Bags

Once you know it’s time to transition your swaddle, it’s important to have a plan in place to ensure the transition is smooth. Initially you will be transitioning from the Love to Swaddle UP to the Love To Dream™ Swaddle UP™ Transition Bag or Sleep Suit.

The Love To Dream™ Swaddle UP™ Transition Bag still features the innovative ARMS UP™ and soft, stretchy material to enable movement of the legs and hips which help your baby sleep well. But it also features unique zip-off wings which will make transitioning away from a traditional newborn swaddle easy and simple. The best plan is to remove one wing at a time and to then give your baby time to adapt before removing the second wing.

Ready to Roll - when to transition your baby from swaddling

Alternatively, you might want to invest in a Love to Swaddle Up Transition Suit, which is a 5-in-1 solution which can be used as a Swaddle Up Suit, Transition suit, sleep suit, play suit and travel suit and can be used both at home and when away. This new edition to the Love To Dream™ range features legs so your baby can move and roll around freely at night and also stand, crawl or walk once they wake up. Made of the same snuggly soft fabric as the Swaddle UP™, your little one will love wearing the Transition Suit in the mornings or evenings and its flexible design means they can continue using it as they grown and learn to explore.
