Temperature Guides & Size Charts for Love to Dream NZ

Room Temperature & TOG Ratings

In many markets around the world, garments can be given a TOG rating according to the warmth they provide. Basically, the higher the TOG, the warmer the product. TOG stands for ‘Thermal Overall Grade’, which is a unit of measurement used to calculate the thermal insulation of a product, usually in the textile industry. The majority of our products currently feature a TOG rating, but not all.

We believe the simplest way to make sure your baby is suitably dressed is to dress for ROOM TEMPERATURE. Therefore, as well as featuring TOG we are also highlighting room temperature and, in some instances, associating this with MODERATE temperature classification to help cover a broader range of room temperatures.

To best dress for different room temperatures and ensure you select the right Love to Dream product follow these three simple steps:

  1. Prior to selecting a Love to Dream product we would recommend having a good understanding of the temperature of your baby’s room
  2. Always look for the ideal room temperature guidance on our products and website to help your selection.
  3. Follow the recommended clothing by room temperature dressing guide.

Below is a set of guidelines that helps parents and carers understand the different TOG and additional classifications available at LOVE TO DREAM and their suitability across differing room temperatures:

Dressing your baby:

The clothing you dress your baby in underneath their Love to Dream™ garment is also really important. The chart above provides some recommendations for what they might be comfortable in, according to their room temperature and the TOG rating of their Love to Dream™ sleepwear.

Disclaimer:

The chart is only a guide – all babies are different. The number of clothing layers may vary according to a baby's health, their physiology, and the room temperature in the room. The caregiver must determine what is suitable.

Safety note:

It is important to check your baby regularly to ensure that they are comfortable and that they do not overheat. For more safety information, please see our Safe Sleep Guide.

Getting the right fit

  • Ages, weights and child heights are approximate. For best fit for our Stage 1 & 2 products, please select size according to your child’s weight, not their age.

  • For the Stage 3 products & rompers, the sizing is based on the length/height of the child, not weight or age.

  • Please bear in mind that baby shapes vary, and even if you purchased your Swaddle Up™ based on the correct weight, it is important to check that the garment fits snugly across the chest and is not loose around the neck when zipped up to the top. Having a snug fit is important for ensuring the swaddling effect, and it also prevents a breathing hazard as there is no loose fabric from the garment which could slide up over the mouth.

  • Parents with babies who are underweight or premature should always consult their health professional before using a swaddle.

  • If you find the swaddle is too tight for your baby, try removing layers if you have additional layers underneath the swaddle. Otherwise, you may need to change it for a larger size. Please note that the arm sleeves are intentionally short, to provide the swaddling effect.

Stage 1: Newborn & Swaddling

Use our Swaddle Up™ from birth until your baby shows signs of trying to roll over. Select size according to your child’s weight, not their age.

Size Guide for Love to Dream Swaddle - Stage 1: Newborn & Swaddling

You must stop using the Swaddle Up™ when your baby shows signs of trying to roll. This is the time to begin the transition to arms-free sleep.

Stage 2: Ready to Roll (Transition)

When your baby shows signs of starting to roll, use our Swaddle Up™ Transition Bag or Suit to transition them from swaddling to arms-free sleep. Select size according to your child’s weight, not their age.

You should not use the Swaddle Up™️ Transition Bag or Suit with both wings attached if your baby is already showing signs of trying to roll. Begin the transition to arms-free sleep straight away by removing at least one wing.

Stage 3: On the Move (Independent Sleep)

From approximately 6 months, use the Love to Dream Sleep Suit™ (first chart) or Love to Dream Sleep Bag™ (second chart), once baby is on-the-move and sleeping independently. Select size based on the length/height of your child, not their age.

Rompers

The rompers can be worn as a fitted layer under all swaddles, sleep bags and sleep suits or just as an everyday item for your young one. Select size based on the length/height of your child, not their age.

Love to Dream's rompers are the perfect way to layer up under your baby's Swaddle Up or Sleep Suit!

Please note all maximum heights measured from a childs head head to toe.
